"One UWI, One Alumni Family"

A Cry for Help Answered by UWI Alumna Dr. Anna Law

Article Contributed by Mr. James Peart

Background:

Align Orthodontics owned and operated by Orthodontist Dr. Anna Law, is an orthodontic (dental) practice that specialises in "more than braces, they create great faces". Dr. Law's vision for patient care is that she always seeks out new ways to give her patients the best possible care, with the best possible results in a comfortable environment. Located in Suite 10, 53 Lady Musgrave Road, Kingston 10 they provide Braces, Sleep Apnea Help, TMJ Therapy Relief and much more to the public. Dr. Law champions her practice as the Orthodontist and lead care giver but what any patient can reassure you, is that she has an amazing team of highly trained and caring individuals to support your dental journey.

How it happened:

With the immense mental and financial stress of commencing final year and already owing hundreds of thousands of dollars for the previous academic year, James Peart decided to create a GoFundMe Page to garner financial assistance from the public to complete his final year. The expenses I faced included Tuition, Housing on Hall, Dental Tools and Supplies, Dental Licensing Exam Fees and all the other miscellaneous costs no one mentions, all amounting to millions of dollars. Creating this GoFundMe was the only possible way I saw in being able to cover those upcoming expenses for dentistry, as he was previously jumping from financial restrictions to financial restrictions regarding his fees. So he started asking friends, family and their friends to share as widely as possible and was extremely grateful for the support from Family, Friends and Friends of Friends. Fortunately, Dr. Law saw the call for help through the GoFundMe Page and decided to assist.

My thoughts:

When I first got the call from Dr. Law, I was extremely grateful that she saw my plight and decided to assist me and was happy for any amount that she would be interested to donate but when she said five(5) million dollars, I was left utterly speechless and she filled the gaps where I couldn't speak. She checked to see if I was still on the line and said: this gift to you is one that should be seen as a seed, giving you an opportunity to see your dreams become a reality and in the future pay it forward by helping others in any way you can, so take this gift, worry no more on the finances and focus on becoming the best dentist for your community and the world. Since then, I've had the opportunity to meet Dr. Law in person and I've come to realize that she's a beacon of excellence and wisdom not only in her career as a dental professional but also as a wife, a mother and a servant of the people giving of herself to the benefit of others. I hope to continue living my life in a way deserving of this award and hope to become an individual who will be able to do the same for others.
