The Director, UWI Alumni Relations, Celia Davidson Francis recently met with the UWIAA Florida Chapter in Fort Lauderdale to plan the implementation of their key strategic initiatives and to recognise their sterling efforts.
The meetings included a focus on the Chapter’s Event Committee, centring on maximizing impact while minimizing costs, as well as strategic planning with Chapter executives—Dr. Cheralee Morgan (President), Dr. Kendra Morgan (First Vice President), Dr. Sharon Porter (Second Vice President), and Ms. Diana Turnbull (Immediate Past President). These discussions underscored the Chapter’s leadership in fostering collaboration with other international UWIAA chapters, with recommendations to prioritize high-impact initiatives, strengthening alumni partnerships, and expanding the Pelican Perks Advantage programme to enhance strategic alignment and several collaborative projects were agreed. The Chapter also shared some exciting new ideas and plans which will lead to more involvement. Dr. Enid Jones, though based in Dallas, joined the discussions via phone as she remains an active member, enjoying the camaraderie, the Caribbean spirit and the positive impacts that she and the other Chapter members make together. The Director also acknowledged Dr. Rupert Rhodd (Treasurer) and Dr. Peter George Smith (Public Relations Officer), who had planned to attend but were unable to do so due to unforeseen circumstances. During a more informal social gathering, the Director delivered remarks and presented tokens of appreciation, emphasizing alumni engagement, as well as sustainability through the One UWI Responsible Futures Programme.
Special recognition was given to Dr. Carmen Nicholas (Former Alumni Representative and Past Chapter President) and Mrs. Miriam White (Executive Member) for their long-standing service and unwavering support. The Chapter’s strong tradition of giving scholarships was also highlighted by the Director who praised the Chapter’s consistency and plans were solidified for contributions to workforce development priorities, particularly in green and sustainable careers. Additionally, emphasis was placed on continuously strengthening alumni engagement, as well as leveraging alumni networks to enhance scholarship opportunities, involve young alumni and support future events.
