On January 01, 2024, Hon. Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario announced 25 new appointments for 2023. Among these outstanding recipients is our Herbert Ho Ping Kong (STGC Class of 1957). Dr. Ho Ping Kong is a graduate of the University of the West Indies (1965).
His citation reads in part, "Dr. Herbert Ho Ping Kong is a pioneer in medical education. His book, The Art of Medicine: Healing and the Limits of Technology, is a must-read for students worldwide. He has been the go-to source of diagnostic expertise, with an uncanny ability to ferret out the underlying causes of illnesses that have mystified other experts. Known as a true "renaissance man", he walks with great humility, a calm and quiet demeanour and genuine care for everyone. The University Health Network named an educational centre - The HoPingKong Centre for Excellence in Education and Practice - to honour his lifetime contributions to medical education and exemplary legacy of diagnosing diseases."
The Order of Ontario is the province's highest civilian honour, awarded to individuals who have shown the highest level of excellence and achievement and "whose impact has left a legacy" in the province of Ontario, the country, Canada, and around the world.
Two other Jamaican Canadians were awarded the 2023 Order of Ontario: Gervan Fearon, President of George Brown College and Dwayne Morgan, poet and spoken word artiste.
