Dr. The Hon. Muriel Lowe-Valentine, O.J.

January 30, 1929 – July 9, 2022

Dr. the Hon. Muriel Lowe-Valentine, O.J. was one of the first batch of thirty-three medical
students who enrolled in the University College of the West Indies in 1948.
A pulmonologist, she served as Senior Medical Officer of the National Chest Hospital for 29
years and was the premier pulmonary medical teacher and clinician for the University of the
West Indies for 28 years, during which time she has trained directly, or influenced significantly,
the careers of Caribbean pulmonologists for the second half of the 20 th century.

Dr. Lowe is internationally recognized for her ground-breaking work in diagnosis and treatment
of sarcoidosis, which laid the foundation for an understanding of the geographic link to
prevalent studies of sarcoidosis in the British Isles. She notably described the first systematic
study of the prevalence of sarcoidosis in the Caribbean.
After her retirement from the National Chest Hospital, she served as Registrar of the Medical
Council of Jamaica.
She was honoured for her service to Jamaica with the award of the Order of Distinction in 1986
and the Order of Jamaica in 2009
